Comeniusproject rond 'vreemde talen onderwijs'
Our school (Nilüfer Koc Primary School) is one of 13 schools across the country which were, with the principle of “build-transfer-preserve”, built in 1999 by Vehbi Koc Foundation to support 8-year compulsory primary education.
Today our school, which is located in Bursa, a northwest city of Turkey, gives education to pupils at the ages between 7-14 and it has kindergarten classes giving pre-education. In our school pupils at the age of 10 start learning English when they are at the 4th grade. 4th and 5th grades take English classes 3 hours a week whereas the other grades (6th-7th-8th) take 4 hours a week.
The fact that our school, among other public schools, has come first in the placement tests called SBS as an inevitable result of democratic atmosphere in the school, remarkable successes in education and the full equipment of educational materials has ensured that both our pupils and their parents have latched on to and loved the school. Whereas we had only one ICT classroom during the 2001-2002 academic year, today each of our classes has been transformed into a techno class equipped with 24hour internet access, smartboards, projectors and computers. For the use of smartboards in lessons our school has played a pioneering role.
As a school we participated in both local and international projects. We successfully completed a Comenius Project called “Maths and Science Teaching Methodology in Compulsory Education” with the cooperation of other countries such as Sweden, Italy, Poland and Latvia. We made visits and hosted European counterpart schools throughout the project. We gained a good experience of organizing activities and festivals during the project.
We have also joined in e-twinning projects with other countries. These projects are still going on. This year we would like to initiate another project. As ELT teachers, we wish to start and join in a project on Language Teaching. Throughout this possible project we aim to make comparisons of our English curriculum to other European ones in order to keep up with the EU standards of ELT. So far we made considerable progress in teaching English, which is easily seen in our unique achievements in placement tests. However, we would like to carry this to the international standards. As a candidate country for EU, we give great importance to learning English as a global language, and following this we hope to improve the quality of learning English in our school. Our efforts and successes in the previous project give us considerable courage to launch or take part in a new project like this.
We are aiming to start a new Comenius project on one of the topics below:
- Cross-curricular project on English
- Creative and Effective Foreign Language Learning (the usage of ICT and the application of contemporary methodology in learning a foreign language)
- Cultural Effects on Foreign Language Learning
